Baseball Marketing
I just recently read an article about baseballs ability to keep their marketing numbers where they have been in the past few years. Some analysts were worried the image of the game of baseball would be tarnished by the Mitchell Report which was presented this winter, concerning steroids in baseball and naming some high profile players as users of steroids. However, the season just recently started and season ticket holders are ready for the season and ballparks across the country are still filling up with fans eager to see some of the world's best baseball players. Many people attribute this to baseball's strong brand identity. Despite this latest "scandal" along with problems baseball has had in the past such as strikes, baseball still has one of the strongest brands out there. After all it is "America's Favorite Pastime." While the sports integrity may have been compromised, I believe that baseball will still have a strong attraction to millions of people across the country. I can say i am anxious to get to a few games myself, this summer.

Affiliate Programs
I like the idea of affiliate programs. Stores like Wal-mart will put ads on your site so that viewers of your site can go directly to the Wal-mart website and shop. The incentive to do a program like this is that if a viewer uses the ad on your site to go to the Wal-mart site and buys a product from the site, you will get a commission based on what they bought and how much it cost. Though there is a subscription fee, it is a simple and easy way to make a little extra money that you can put into your business or website. Overall, a well conceived idea.

Advertising in NASCAR
NASCAR is the fastest growing spectator sport in the United States. Millions of fans buy tickets or watch the races every weekend, whether it be the Nation Wide Series (formerly the Busch Series) or the Sprint Cup Series (originally the Winston Cup). Of course for the drives to have good cars, they need good sponsors. This is where the advertising comes in.
Hundreds of companies pay to put a decal on stock cars, whether it be a small decal on the quarter panel of the car or the main sponsor on the hood of the car. This is a good way to get your business name out there to the people. Businesses can put it in their sponsorship contract that the drive must say their company name in any interviews the driver is in; hence the numerous sponsors that are spit out before the driver actually gets to how their car was handling throughout the race.
I know most people think that you must put a lot of money into sponsoring a car and it may not be cost effective. Parts of that statement are true. Depending how big the decal is and where it is positioned on the car, determines how much it will cost you as a company to place a decal on a car. Obviously smaller decals cost less and are still effective. This also does not have to be an actual "bricks" company. Online business owners can also advertise on cars. This could potentially get the exposure needed to become a "bricks and clicks" business if that is the aspirations of the business owner.
Overall, I think that advertising on a stock car, or having a commercial during a race is a good way to get your business out to the public to possibly increase productivity.

Superbowl Commercials
I realize the assignment is to comment about online advertising, but seeing as the Superbowl was just last night and this is usually a night for good commercials, I figured I would comment on these instead.
This years Superbowl commercials were surprisingly disappointing. Only a few commercials really stood out to me. My favorite of this year's set was the Doritos commercial where the guy puts a chip on a mouse trap and puts it in front of the mouse whole. He then pulls up a chair and eats some while waiting for the mouse. The mouse however, is a man in a mouse suit who barrels through the wall and proceeds to punch the man with the Doritos. I think Doritos had a good idea this year in letting the people submit their own videos. It helps the company get an idea of what the public wants to see in a commercial and what they can connect to the best.
Another commercial I liked was the Pepsi rewards commercial. At first I thought it was going to be bad because Justin Timberlake was in it, but after seeing him get dragged across the screen and having his crotch rammed into a mailbox post several times and finally getting hit in the head with a tv, i couldn't resist laughing. This was a good commercial because girls will pay attention because of Justin and guys will laugh seeing him get beat up while still getting the point across. Overall I think it was affective.
And finally how can you pass up the combination of Budweiser and Rocky? I liked this commercial and I'm sure most men payed attention to it because you can recognize it is a Budweiser commercial from the start by seeing the Clydesdales and dalmatian. I enjoyed the spin of having the horse not make the team and then working out to the Rocky theme song. That music is inspirational and made want to get another beer.
Overall I thought this year's Superbowl commercials were a disappointment, but the Giants beating the Patriots made up for it.
